How does learning at Primer work?

Our approach to teaching and learning.

At Primer, we believe every student can succeed when they're challenged at the right level, supported by caring educators, and given opportunities to apply what they're learning in meaningful ways. Because every child learns differently, educators meet students where they are, providing targeted instruction and support that helps each student build mastery before moving on to more advanced concepts.

It's common for students in the same classroom to be working on different skills at the same time, allowing every student to continue making steady progress. Rather than measuring learning by how much time a student spends on a topic, we focus on mastery. Students demonstrate understanding before advancing, helping them build strong academic foundations, close learning gaps, and grow in confidence.

Throughout the day, students participate in small-group instruction, mastery-based literacy and math learning, independent practice, collaborative discussions, hands-on projects, and regular opportunities to reflect on their goals and progress. This balanced approach helps students strengthen academic skills while developing the independence they'll use throughout their lives.

Technology plays an important role in supporting learning, but it never replaces great teaching. Students use digital tools to practice skills, access lessons, and monitor their progress, while educators use that information to identify where each student is thriving, where additional support is needed, and when they're ready to move forward.

One of the most distinctive parts of a Primer education is Pursuits. These interdisciplinary, project-based learning experiences bring together subjects like science, social studies, literacy, math, technology, civic education, and the arts through real-world challenges and student interests. Through these projects, students develop critical thinking, creativity, communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills while discovering how classroom learning connects to everyday life.

We believe students learn best when they take ownership of their education. As they grow, students learn to set goals, manage responsibilities, monitor their progress, and reflect on their learning. These habits help them become confident, self-directed learners who are prepared for success both inside and outside the classroom.

Families are an important part of that journey. Through the Primer App, families can view academic progress, attendance, schedules, and school updates while staying connected with educators. By working together, families and educators create a strong partnership that supports every student's growth.

At its core, Primer combines mastery-based learning, strong relationships, and meaningful real-world experiences to help every student thrive. Our goal isn't simply to prepare students for the next grade level—it's to equip students with the curiosity, confidence, and independence they'll carry with them for life.
